As the name suggests, abdominal ultrasound is about producing ultrasound real-time images of the abdominal organ. The technology to capture images and videos (inside of the body) using high-frequency sound waves is called Ultrasound. Abdominal ultrasound helps in visualizing the organs/structures in the abdomen region. This technology is used as a diagnostic method and is helpful in diagnosing abdominal diseases. Abdominal ultrasound is able to produce real-time images of internal organs. The use of ultrasound especially abdominal ultrasound has increased significantly. Abdominal ultrasound is non-invasive, painless and 100% safe. Like the X-ray or CT Scan, it does not use radiation technology, hence much safer and secure than both these methods.

Why Abdominal Ultrasound Is Required?
There are many vital and major organs are located in the abdominal cavity. These organs are the Gall bladder, Liver, Kidney, Stomach, Pancreas, Intestines, and Spleen. There are many disorders and diseases related to these organs. Abdominal ultrasound helps to visualize and study these abnormalities very easily. Generally, the suspected cases of the blood clot, enlarged organ (liver, spleen, or kidney), gall bladder stone, hernia, kidney stone, fluid in the abdominal cavity, tumors, pancreatitis, cancer, appendicitis, etc. are detected with the help of abdominal ultrasound. Apart from this abdominal ultrasound also helps doctors to perform certain medical procedures like drain fluid from the abscess and to determine blood flow inside the abdomen.
How To Prepare For The Abdominal Ultrasound?
The preparation depends on the organ under surveillance. Generally, doctors recommend fasting for at least 8 hours. This is because undigested food in the stomach can block sound waves. This will hamper the ultrasound imaging process. However, in several cases where medications are necessary for the patient, do inform the doctors clearly. If the organ is detected in the liver, pancreas, gall bladder, or spleen then the doctor may instruct you to ingest a fat-free meal overnight and then fast till the ultrasound is performed.
The Process Performed In The Test
Radiologists in an ultrasound clinic or chamber will ask you about your fasting status. If they found the details suitable, then they will call you inside to perform an abdominal ultrasound. In case they feel that some factors are yet to be matched to conduct the test, then they will guide you accordingly. Once you will inside the chamber, they will inquire about some details and medical conditions for which the test is recommended. They will make lie down on the table with an exposed abdomen.
Then ultrasound technician will apply the lubricating gel to the abdomen. This lubricating gel prevents the formation of air pockets between the skin and the ultrasound transducer. Do inform the technician about any pain in the abdomen. The procedure will be over in less than 20 minutes. After the test technician will wipe off the lubricating gel from the abdomen. The radiologist will interpret the image captures during the test and reports will be handed over to you within hours.
